Born in 1968 in Beijing, Xiang Jing graduated from the Sculpture Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1995. From 1999 to 2007, she taught at the Sculpture Studio of the Fine Arts College, Shanghai Normal University and is currently working and living in Beijing.
Xiang Jing is not so much a "feminist" artist as an artist with a feminist perspective and feminist consciousness, but these are not the real story. The uneasiness revealed in her works is the constant confirmation of humanity mist and survival itself in modern society-"internality" is the truth of living she is trying to excavate. Question first is the working method of Xiang Jing, but she has conducted very unique and far-reaching contemporary experiments in marginalized realistic sculpture languages, in the language construction of individualized modeling, sculpture coloring and the use of FRP materials, which have created her paintings featured by “appear to be figurative realism externally, but explore the inner spiritual value of human nature substantially” and have formed a unique style in contemporary art. When it comes to academic propositions such as "contemporary and traditional media", "female identity and universal humanity", "observing and being observed", "intrinsic desire", "abstraction of concrete art", Xiang Jing and her creations are unavoidable cases.
The Yuelai Exhibition Center chose the location between the mountains and rivers. Therefore, the scenery became the biggest highlight. In the plan, a little bit of art works are gradually growing from hundreds of kilometers around the landscape. When I first contacted with this case, I would pay more attention to the nature of nature itself. It is best not to grab too many positions for the art works, but to better make the art works integrate into the environment and get along with the scenery.
So I chose the theme of birds and beasts in the animal series in my works. The following prototype of a beast is a work called the Undamaged Beast, using the form of horses, deer, and coffins to fabricate a beast that does not exist in the world. The name is taken from ShanHaiJing(Classic of Mountains and Seas), meaning the body cannot be damaged by the knife and axe, and therefore, it is an eternal animal. On the body of the beast stands a bird with the pelican as prototype. Like the Undamaged Beast, I also deformed it. Both animals are animals that seem to be acquainted but not “real”. I also selected a water surface near the main hall as the place. The two beasts stood quietly on the water, and they love each other. The shape and the inside part are attached to the good mountains and waters around them. I hope they will slowly and naturally fit under the influence of oxidation, peaceful and quiet. Therefore, I named it Silence Forming.
